エドウィン・ルメアは、イギリスに生まれ後にアメリカを中心に世界的に活躍した、おそらく史上最も多くの聴衆を動員した コンサート・オルガニストです。

1930年を境に、オルガン演奏に代ってオーケストラの演奏旅行やラジオ・映画が普及するにつれ、 彼の名声は忘れ去られ、オルガンという楽器も大衆の前から姿を消し再び教会の中へ隠れてしまいます。 驚いたことに、最も権威があるとされるニュー・グローヴの音楽辞典にさえルメアに関する記述は見あたりません。

この１０年間にようやく復活のきざしが見え、オルガニストは彼が編曲したオーケストラ作品（特にワグナー）をしばしば プログラムに加えるようになりました。

  1913年、ルメアは演奏家としてその絶頂期において、ヴェルテの自動オルガンのために演奏の記録を行い、 その数 実に100本近くのロールが残された。この中から何曲かを選び、1970年代に ネルソン・バーデン氏が ボストンの Church of the Covenant のヴェルテ・オルガンを使用して録音を行った。 同氏の許可を得て ここに RealAudio と MP3 でその一部をお聴かせする。
